Participants Needed for an Interview Study at University of Washington, Seattle

Are you a person with a mobility impairment? OR Are you a caregiver for a person with a mobility impairment? Here is a chance to contribute to the next generation of accessible maps!

Our research team is studying methods to enhance existing map technologies and develop new mapping tools to support people with mobility impairments.

We are recruiting participants to better understand how people with mobility impairments and their caregivers assess street and sidewalk accessibility. The interviews will ask about how you assess sidewalk accessibility in your neighborhood. The study will also ask you to perform a set of tasks to analyze our initial map paper prototypes visualizing sidewalk accessibility. Finally, we will solicit thoughts on future accessible mapping tools.

You must be at least 18 years old, have no vision (including color vision) impairments (using corrective lenses is acceptable), and be either a:

  1. Person using one or more of the following mobility aids: (i) manual wheelchair, (ii) electric wheelchair or scooter, or (iii) other manual assistive aids (e.g., cane or walker).
  2. Person taking care of someone with a mobility impairment either as a professional or as a family member/friend.

Study sessions will be conducted at our lab on the University of Washington, Seattle campus. The studies will be starting from April 8, 2019. You will participate in one study session of 1.5 - 2 hours. You will receive a compensation of $25/hour for your time and up to $30 towards transportation costs.

If you are interested to participate, please email Manaswi Saha (manaswi@cs.uw.edu) with the following information:

  • Your name, age, and occupation
  • If you are a person with a mobility impairment, what assistive aid do you use?
  • If you are a caregiver:
